The Silent Killer: Addressing the Dangers of Opioids in Our Communities

In today’s world, the opioid crisis is a danger lurking closer than ever before. It can start with something as seemingly innocent as taking one pill from a friend or participating in a so-called “game” like Skittles, where teens mix pills from home medicine cabinets for recreational use. But these choices often turn deadly. A single pill could contain fentanyl—a substance so potent that even a tiny dose can kill.

One Pill Can Kill

What might look like a prescription medication could be a counterfeit pill laced with deadly fentanyl or other opioids. There are no second chances when taking that risk. All it takes is one moment of experimentation; what begins as curiosity can end in tragedy.

When Fun Turns Fatal: The Game of Skittles

The “Skittles” game is no game at all. Mixing pills with friends may seem harmless to some youth, but it can result in a night of death and heartbreak. What many young people don’t realize is that even medications meant to help when prescribed appropriately can be lethal when misused or in combination with other substances.

The Ripple Effect of Loss

The opioid crisis doesn’t discriminate. It touches every corner of our communities. Parents, caregivers, families, law enforcement officers, schools, and businesses have all felt the impact of opioid-related losses. We’ve all heard heartbreaking stories: a mother losing her son, a sibling burying their brother, a father left grieving his daughter. These stories are becoming all too common, and they serve as a sobering reminder that opioid addiction knows no boundaries.

Raising Awareness: Candy or Killer?

To further educate the community about the hidden dangers of opioids, the Power Collective is launching a **billboard campaign across the Upstate**, with plans to expand throughout South Carolina. The campaign delivers a powerful message:

Candy or Killer? Your child can’t tell the difference! Prevention Starts Here!

These billboards are designed to spark conversations between parents, caregivers, and children, reinforcing that even seemingly harmless choices can have devastating outcomes. Visit PowerCollectiveSC.com for more information, resources, and ways to get involved in this life-saving effort.
